Lexus LFA Overview
Design and Exterior
The Lexus LFA doesn’t look as exotic as its Italian rivals but its sharp design boasts class-leading aerodynamics. It looks quite sophisticated but the CFRP body allowed the designers to give it plenty of sharp curves and edges. This supercar boasts a number of matte-black air intakes and an active rear wing that adds a sporty tone to its design. The sleek design of this coupe is complemented by large 20 Inch BBS forged alloy wheels. The LFA looks very charming and it is offered in 30 colour schemes to choose from.
Engine and Gearbox
Powering the Lexus LFA is a 4.8L naturally aspirated V10 engine that is developed in partnership with Yamaha. Its compact and lightweight engine comes with Dual VVT-i technology and it gets 12-hole fuel injectors. The V10 engine is fitted with titanium valves and magnesium alloy cam covers. This supercar gets electronically controlled individual throttle bodies for each cylinder that provides a fantastic throttle response. Lexus LFA comes with a 6-speed automated sequential gearbox that transfers the power to the rear wheel. It is fitted with a single-clutch system that makes the gear shifts a bit clunky in automatic mode. The dry sump lubrication system is planted deep below the engine to achieve a low centre of gravity.
Performance and Top Speed
The V10 engine is capable of producing 552 horsepower at 8,700 rpm while it red-lines at 9,000 rpm. Lexus LFA churns out 480 Nm of peak torque at 6,800 rpm but 90 percent of the torque is available from 3,700 rpm onwards. This supercar has an exceptional power-to-weight ratio of 373 hp per tonne. Coming to the most important question, How fast does it go? Well the Lexus LFA clocks a top speed of 325 kmph and it accelerates from 0 to 100 kmph in just 3.7 seconds. This coupe also offers four driving modes, automatic, sport, normal, and wet.
Chassis and Suspensions
One of the major reason’s behind the delayed production of LFA was that Lexus decided to switch body and chassis construction from aluminium to carbon fibre reinforced plastic during the development phase. The Lexus LFA is built on a CFRP monocoque frame with an aluminium subframe that gives it a sturdy stance. The carbon fibre structure helps this coupe shed a lot of weight and provides amazing strength. It comes with a constant-rate electric power steering that renders a great feel. Lexus LFA is fitted with a double-wishbone front suspension and a multilink-type rear suspension. Most of its suspension components are made up of aluminium alloy to save weight.
Brakes and Wheels
To stop the Lexus LFA from lightning speeds, the brand has equipped it with powerful cross-drilled ventilated carbon ceramic disc brakes on all four wheels. It is fitted with 390 mm discs with 6-piston callipers on the front wheels and 360 mm discs with 4-pot callipers on the rear wheels. It uses lightweight aluminium callipers and high friction micron pads. The attractive 20-Inch forged aluminium BBS wheels of the Lexus LFA are wrapped with premium Bridgestone Potenza tyres. It rides on 265/35ZR20 tyres at the front and 305/20ZR20 tyres at the rear.
Interior
The low-slung cabin of the Lexus LFA is tastefully designed and hand-built. It features bucket seats that offer 8-way power adjustability options. Buyers are provided with a wide range of leather shades and Alcantara hues to choose from for seat coverings. The LFA features an LCD instrument cluster that shows plenty of vehicle data. A selector switch is fitted on the left side of the steering wheel to toggle between the instrument panel and cabin features.
Safety Features
For a car launched nearly a decade ago, the Lexus LFA come with a good deal of safety and driver assistance features. The carbon fibre-reinforced plastic central structure of this car has amazing impact absorption capacity. It comes with 2-stage adaptive front airbags, seat belt airbags for the driver, and knee airbags for both driver and passenger. The Lexus LFA comes anti-lock braking system, vehicle stability control, and a traction control system like the 2024 Toyota Veloz. It is packed with Lexus’s Vehicle Dynamic Integrated Management System that ensures the smooth functioning of driver assistance features.
Dimension and Capacity
This supercar measures 4,505 mm in total length and it has a wheelbase of 2,605 mm. Lexus LFA kerb weight is only 1,480 kg which is one of the main reasons behind its exceptional handling characteristic and brisk acceleration. It provides a ground clearance of 114 mm and this coupe offers a fuel tank capacity of 73 litres. This supercar can accommodate two people and it also offers compact storage space.
Lexus LFA Price in India and Launch Date
The production-ready model of the LFA was revealed at the Tokyo Motor Show in 2009. The production of this supercar was limited to only 500 units and it was hand-assembled at the Motomachi plant in Toyota City. The Lexus LFA price in India would have been close to Rs 1.81 crore excluding import duties. Even though it has been discontinued a long time ago there are four unsold LFA models sitting at dealerships around the world.
Our Verdict on the Lexus LFA
The LFA is one of the most underrated supercars that received a lot of criticism during its initial days. This sleek-looking coupe is based on a carbon fibre-reinforced plastic chassis which makes it very lightweight. The compact naturally-aspirated V10 engine of the LFA produces a staggering 552 horsepower. Its 6-speed automated sequential gearbox works flawlessly in manual mode, but it gets a little rough in automatic mode. It comes with an aesthetically pleasing cabin and it also gets a decent safety features package. The Lexus LFA is an engineering masterpiece that promises to leave you with the biggest grin every time you push the gas pedal.
