The Indian car industry is now recovering and most of the car manufacturers are achieving their pre covid sales figures. Tata Motors is one of the most popular car brands in India and it has been posting consistent growth in sales numbers after the pandemic. Tata Motors has recorded a YOY sales growth of 185.5% in May 2022.
The brand sold a total of 43,340 cars in May 2022 compared to 15,180 in May 2021. This huge jump in sales figures has made Tata Motors the second best-selling car brand in the Indian market after Maruti Suzuki. Another Indian car brand that has posted phenomenal growth this month is Mahindra. Mahindra has posted a YOY sales growth of 244%.

The Tata Nexon continues to be the best-selling model in the manufacturer’s lineup. Tata managed to sell around 14,614 units of the Nexon compact SUV in May 2022 resulting in 127% year-on-year growth. The newly launched Tata Punch has recorded a sales figure of 10,241 in May and it has quickly become one of the best-selling SUVs in India. Tata Punch has dethroned Tiago and Altroz to become the second best selling model in Tata Motors’ portfolio.
In the hatchbacks segment, Altroz and Tiago registered a sales figure of 4,913 and 4,561 respectively. Tata hatchback car sales have grown by 73.5% on a YOY basis. The brand is also gearing up to launch new EV models in the hatchback segment. Tata Tigor is the only sedan in the brand’s lineup and it recorded sales of 3,975 units in May.
Even the flagship Tata cars have posted decent growth in the sales number in May. The Tata Harrier registered a sales number of 2,794 units which is up by 105% on a YOY basis. Tata Safari is the least selling model in the brand’s lineup and it recorded a sales of 2,242 units in May which is 46% higher than the previous year.
