Engine, Gearbox, and Performance
Yamaha will equip this new supersport with a 200cc single-cylinder, four-stroke, four-valve engine with a double overhead camshaft. The Yamaha YZF-R2 will use an electronic fuel injection system for the fuel supply. Its liquid-cooled engine will come with a variable valve actuation (VVA) system that will ensure it delivers consistent power and torque across the rev band. It will be mated to a constant mesh 6-speed transmission with a quick shifter which will allow clutch-less shifting of gears. This supersport is expected to produce around 24 hp of max power and 18.5 Nm of peak torque. Yamaha YZF-R2 will also get an assist and slipper clutch system that will maintain appropriate engine braking and also provide smooth downshifts. It will also allow the rider to choose between two riding modes.
Suspension and Brakes
The Yamaha YZF-R2 will come with a high-performance suspension system which will be designed to suit its sporty riding characteristics. It will be equipped with a 37 mm invited telescopic suspension at the front end. At the rear end, it will feature a link-type monocross shock absorber with adjustable preload. The reports from the automobile industry suggest that the Yamaha YZF-R2 is in the initial stages of development. It might take a year or two before the brand comes with the production-ready model of this bike. Yamaha will have to design and develop the 200cc pattern from scratch which may take quite some time. The price of Yamaha YZF-R2 in India is expected to start at Rs 2.10 Lakh (ex-showroom). Yamaha may also launch a Monster Energy MotoGP edition of this supersport which will be priced slightly higher than the standard model.
Rivals
The entry-level supersport segment in India is very competitive with a wide range of models from top brands vying for customers’ attention. The Yamaha YZF-R2 will be competing against the KTM RC 200, Bajaj Pulsar RS 200, Suzuki Gixxer SF 250, and Hero XTreme 200S. A lightweight chassis combined with a high-end suspension system will help this supersport attain agile handling and engaging riding dynamics. Yamaha will equip it with a range of riding aids and safety features that will boost the rider’s confidence and enhance the riding experience.
